Empowering young parents to provide the best care possible for their children is the guiding principle behind the planned Young Parents Supportive Housing and Resource Centre. A collaborative project between Choices for Youth, Daybreak Parent Child Centre, Eastern Health, Service Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network, this facility will provide housing and support services for young, single-parent families.

After multiple planning sessions, visits to similar sites in other provinces, and taking the tremendous steps to secure land and funding, a comprehensive vision for the Young Parents Supportive Housing and Resource Centre has been established. The facility will provide a childcare centre, education and employment programming and counselling, parental and prenatal education and support, and drop-in services. Our goal is to complete construction of the centre and open its doors within the next few years.

Young Parents Supportive Housing and Resource Centre

Child care support, an education, a job, a warm shoulder – these are essential components of great parenting and enable parents to care for themselves and their children. Youth who are pregnant or parenting without these crucial resources face a monumental task that can overwhelm them.

In 2007, a group of government, health care and community partners began working together to find a long-term solution to address the tremendous need for support among many young women and children. The goal of the committee is to develop a new initiative that will provide programming and Young Parents Supportive Housing and Resource Centreresources to these young people to boost their parenting success and, as a result, keep their children in their care.

The committee—which includes representation from Choices for Youth, Daybreak Parent Child Centre, Eastern Health, Service Canada, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network—has made significant strides during the last year and a half in planning this new program: The Young Parents Supportive Housing & Resource Centre Initiative. The main focus has been to develop a facility that will provide vital housing and support services to young, single-parent families. Plans for the facility include a child-care centre, education/employment programming and counseling, outreach/drop-in programming, as well as parenting education and prenatal education and support.

Young Parents Supportive Housing and Resource CentreTo date, a research study was completed outlining the need for these services and committee members visited similar sites in Ontario to learn about their programs and how they work. A two-day planning session with the committee resulted in potential programming plans and a physical design of the centre. Committee members continue to work to secure land and funding, working towards the common goal of supporting and empowering young mothers to raise their children in a healthy and supportive environment.
