Working with government, community, and corporate partners, Choices for Youth opened The Lilly — St. John’s first affordable housing facility for male and female youth facing homelessness — in 2010.

Staffed 24/7, The Lilly creates a strong sense of community while offering single rooms where youth may stay for up to one year. Choices’ Train for Trades team helped to renovate The Lilly as part of their paid learning experience. Based on Eva’s Phoenix in Toronto, The Lilly is a critical housing model for youth that helps fill a major gap for homeless young people in St. John’s.

A key housing milestone was celebrated October 15, 201o, when Choices for Youth and its government, community and corporate partners gathered to officially open the Lilly Building – St. John’s first affordable housing facility for male and female youth facing homelessness.

The project is in response to the hundreds of youth who come through the doors of Choices’ Youth Services Centre every year. For many of these young people, living in unstable and unsafe conditions has been the only life they have known.

This project, based on Eva’s Phoenix in Toronto, created a critical housing model for youth that was once missing. The facility is staffed 24/7 and provides affordable housing to 14 youth at a time for up to one year. Renovations transformed the structure into the one-of-a-kind facility that stands there today. The layout of the building was designed to promote a sense of community while providing individual home spaces in a youth-friendly environment. Some of the units are two-bedroom apartments, with a shared bathroom and kitchenette, while others are one-bedroom units. Youth share community space in the larger kitchens and eating areas, as well as in the living and recreational areas.

The project was made possible through strong, ongoing partnerships with all levels of government, the corporate sector, and other community groups. As a result of that collective support, Choices for Youth was able to provide a much-needed residential facility that will improve the lives of young people who need it the most and for years to come.
